Biodegradation

Biodegradation
Biodegradation is the breakdown of organic matter by microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi.

The substance which can be broken down by microorganisms are biodegradable substance whereas which cannot be broken down by microorganisms are nonbiodegradable substance.

In biodegradation, oxygen(a nonmetallic element) is used by microorganisms to break down organic matter. Which is not compulsory for them. If microorganisms do not use oxygen , then it is called anaerobic biodegradation.
